Acquired: 1984 – Kodak instant camera purchased at flea market. Early interest in instant photography.

Acquired: 1984 – Advanced SLR with aperture-priority automation. Photographed weddings and memorable road trips.
1990s – System Switch and Teaching Tools

Canon EOS Elan
Acquired: 1991 – Landmark camera marking switch from Minolta to Canon and entry into autofocus era. Mainstay for 15 years of family documentation.

Polaroid One Step
Acquired: Mid-late 1990s – SX-70 instant camera initially used for teaching children, later replaced by 600-format cameras for film simplicity.

Polaroid 600 OneStep AutoFocus
Acquired: Mid-late 1990s – Gift from wife. Primary teaching camera for children’s photography adventures alongside the Impulse.

Polaroid Impulse
Acquired: Mid-late 1990s – Rugged instant camera perfect for teaching children. The younger child kept all his photos in his own album.

Acquired: Mid-late 1990s – Wide-format instant camera added for personal exploration and superior image quality.
2000s – Digital Transition Begins

Polaroid PDC-640
Acquired: 2000 or 2001 – First digital camera. Early 0.31MP point-and-shoot exploring whether digital could match Photo CD quality from film.

Minolta Vectis 30
Acquired: 2005 – APS film camera purchased on impulse during San Francisco business trip. Experimented with switchable aspect ratios around Fisherman’s Wharf.

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT
Acquired: 2006 – First DSLR, purchased with hotel points. Replaced the Elan as go-to camera through the digital transition.

Acquired: 2009 – Compact digital originally purchased for son’s school band trip. Retained with meaningful personal history.

Acquired: 2011 – Working collectible with revolutionary Eye Control Focus. Shot film at Hagerman NWR and Frank Buck Zoo.

Acquired: 2025 – Current flagship. Pinnacle of Canon DSLR technology. For high-res scanning of legacy negatives and proving DSLRs aren’t dead.

Acquired: 2025 – Primary film camera with PB-E2 power booster. Film photography renaissance driven by nostalgia and systematic testing at Hagerman NWR.

Acquired: 2010 – First smartphone with Windows Phone 7. 5MP camera marked entry into mobile photography and grab shots.

Acquired: 2013 – Windows Phone 8, upgraded to Windows Phone 10. Best-selling Windows Phone device before platform abandonment.

Acquired: 2018 – Dual-camera system with variable aperture. Began MikeTriesANewRecipe.com recipe documentation representing continuous photographic practice.
